Even if the Oscar nominations scarcely included any LGBT titles this year, David France’s documentary How to Survive a Plague is nominated for Best Documentary Feature.

The film takes a look at ACT-UP and the Treatment Action Group (TAG), activist organizations that pushed for greater availability of life-saving drugs. Using archival footage from the 1980s and early 90s, the documentary sheds light on just what when on on the battle front of the disease, especially for pioneering gay men and lesbians who helped change social stigma and demanded a more effective response to what was then a truly terrifying disease.

Tune in Feb. 24 (7 p.m.) to find out who goes home with a little gold statue. And click here to see the full list of nominations, including Ang Lee for Life of Pi, High Jackman and Anne Hathaway in Les Miserables and Tony Kushner’s screenplay for Lincoln .
